Green Building Council Italia is an association promoted by Società Consortile Distretto Tecnologico Trentino with the objective of diffusing a culture of sustainable construction, informing public opinion and institutions on the impact that construction and design methods cause on the quality of life for citizens, and providing clear parameters for operators in the sector.

The GBC introduced an independent LEED certification system in Italy – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – whose parameters establish precise criteria for designing and creating sound, energy efficient buildings with low environmental impact.

GBC Italia is part of a wider association which began in the USA in 1993, with the establishment of the USGBC, the first Green Building Council, a non-profit organisation committed to diffusing sustainable building standards. Today, the GBC is present in over 40 countries worldwide.

The LEED certification system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) developed by the US Green Building Council is a standard applied in over 100 countries worldwide and it is the most widely diffused environmental rating system used internationally. LEED standards indicate the requirements for constructing sustainable buildings, in terms of energy as well as consumption of all environmental resources used during construction.
